Nick has been with Hyperext for 5 years, 7 months, building and maintaining the core API and connector systems that power our integrations. We sat down with him to get his insights on everything from API development realities to the challenges of keeping pace with Sage updates. His technical perspective reveals the complexity behind seamless integrations and the skills required to make them work reliably.
What does a typical day look like in your role?
“Adding new features to the API and our connectors. I also support customers with existing connectors.”
What’s one major shift you’re seeing in how businesses approach software, integration, or automation?
“They tend to need data flowing quicker – e.g. stock quantities synced with their systems or sales orders going into Sage.”
What do you think is the biggest misconception about APIs, automation, or integrations?
“When developers start using the API and expect it to have business logic built in. The API is a tool to allow developers to access the Sage data, it’s up to them to build the business logic that works for them.”
Where do you see real value in AI – and where do you think it’s just hype?
“Just hype.”
Tell us about a recent project or challenge you worked on that made a clear impact for a client.
“Created a connector for Zoho that allowed a client to have their sales orders go to Sage as invoices. They no longer have to add data into two separate systems.”
What makes a great integration or software solution in your eyes?
“One that runs in the background without any user input and is able to fulfil a customer’s automation needs.”
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a business thinking about upgrading or connecting their systems?
“We can integrate with pretty much anything so if you’re thinking about it, just ask.”
What makes Hyperext different from other providers in this space?
“We can provide an extensive Sage API and we also integrate with other systems using our own API.”
How do you stay up to date with emerging tech and shifting client needs?
“Whenever Sage release an update, I need to examine their reported change log and make changes to our API to accommodate them. Sometimes they make subtle changes that they don’t report and we have to make changes after they’re discovered in testing.”
If you could automate any personal task in your life, what would it be?
“Not a personal task but writing commit messages.”
